Event description

Description

Middle school can be a daunting time in the lives of students, parents and guardians alike. Middle school can be, and most often is, a time of wonder, great fun, the trying on of new young adolescent behaviors, exploration and mindset growth, acceptance of heightened responsibility and preparation for what lies ahead. Students must meet several developmental milestones in their growth from young children to young adolescents to young adults.

As parents, when our children experience the dreaded “growing pains,” our emotions run the gamut from pride to fear, from anxiety to dread, and back again! There are no handbooks that guarantee successful passages for our children, but the more we understand the changes that middle school will present for you and your child, the more we can anticipate the bumps in the road and help guide our children in age-appropriate and effective ways.

With regard to our children’s transitions, there are few that result in as much potential stress as that from elementary school to middle school.

Our children will experience:

  • Transitioning to one (or a few) teachers to several teachers over several periods per day;

  • Increased homework load, rigor and academic expectations;

  • Meeting new peers, making friends from other (sometimes multiple) elementary schools;

  • The need for enhanced organizational and study skills, as well as increased accountability;

  • The possible first experience with school counseling, coupled with their parents/guardian’s own experiences and perceptions of school counseling;

  • The need to balance school and after-school activities while ensuring sufficient sleep and family time;

  • Possible bullying and exclusionary behaviors.

Parent/guardians will experience:

  • Understanding student transition and developmental challenges;

  • The issue of comparing siblings and their respective experiences in MS;

  • Understanding and adhering to school guidelines for parent contact, e.g., calling a teacher, calling a counselor, calling building administrator, calling superintendent;

  • The teaming environment – how does it work and how can it benefit my child?

  • Recognizing the roles of the school counselor, the school psychologist, the school social worker and how they differ from the services of a private counselor/clinician.

During this discussion, we will address how the changes from the elementary school to the middle school environment can be exciting yet at times perplexing, best addressed, and how parents can navigate the changes to support and encourage student success and well-being.

Presenter's Bio:

Fredericka R. Butler, MSEd, SBL, SDL

Fredericka (Ricki) Butler has spent 30 years of her life devoted to children. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and working in the private sector in New York City, Ricki chose to leave the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom to her three children. She simultaneously attended graduate school to earn her Master’s degree in School Counseling. When her youngest child entered the first grade, Ricki began the first of 12 years as a middle school counselor in Northern Westchester public schools. During this time, Ricki taught evening graduate courses in middle school counseling and diversity/multicultural counseling at LIU-Hudson. Eager for further challenges and the qualifications to further support student education, she returned to graduate school to earn advanced certificates in School Building and School District Leadership. Ricki has held administrative positions in professional development for school administrators, alternative secondary education with at-risk students, and most recently as an assistant principal working with her favorite population, middle school students.
