In-Person at DSK: Nonfiction Book Group with Sammi
Date and time
Discussing Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California by Ruth Wilson Gilmore
About this event
For the first time since 2020, our book groups are resuming in-person meetings! Hosted by our neighbors at Die Stammkneipe Brooklyn (710 Fulton St.) and led by Greenlight bookseller Sammi, our nonfiction book group meets monthly to read and discuss the most fascinating topics in nonfiction, both classic and contemporary, with seasonal themes covering a variety of genres. Sammi, leader of our nonfiction book group, writes: “This season will trace the complex origins of the US's racial regimes with a focus on the vitality and vibrancy of the Black freedom struggle. We will read the works of radical academics like Robin DG Kelley, Gerald Horne, and Ruth Wilson Gilmore.” For May, the group discusses Gilmore’s Golden Gulag, an informed and impassioned account examining the contemporary prison boom through statewide, rural, and urban perspectives to explain how this expansion developed from surpluses of finance capital, labor, land, and state capacity.
Book group meetings will be held in DSK's private meeting space; enter through the bar. Drinks and food available for purchase; one item purchase minimum is encouraged!
