Event Details

American modernist Stuart Davis (1892–1964) was riveted by the European cubist style he first saw at the 1914 New York Armory show. His reinterpretation of cubism resulted in a personal idiom of boldly colored, dynamic shapes that reflect his love of jazz music and New York City’s vibrant street culture. His work was a harbinger of the 1960s Pop artists’ interest in advertising, the media, and commercial culture. Drawing upon the exhibition In Full Swing: The Art of Stuart Davis (November 20, 2016–March 5, 2017), this workshop examines the painter’s sources of inspiration through activities that combine music, image making, and the written word.
