Event description

Description

Join us for an evening in conversation with Chuka Umunna MP, hosted by Lib Dem candidate for London Mayor, Siobhan Benita.

Brought up in Streatham, the son of a Nigerian father and English/Irish mother, Chuka became Labour MP for the area in 2010, quickly making a mark as one of the most articulate and thoughtful politicians of his generation and swiftly being promoted to the front bench in 2011, shadowing Vince Cable as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Returning to the backbenches in 2015, Chuka grew increasingly disillusioned with Labour's failure to provide effective opposition on Brexit, and to tackle antisemitism effectively in its own ranks. Leaving Labour in February 2019, he formed Change UK along other former Labour and Conservative MPs, before joining the Lib Dems in June 2019.

Siobhan Benita will be in conversation with Chuka Umunna at the theatre in the Exchange in Twickenham on Monday, 2nd September from 6.30pm to 8pm, followed by informal drinks. Chuka will talk about his fascinating personal and political journey, and his views on the future as we head towards his first Lib Dem party conference, the Brexit deadline at the end of October and, perhaps, an early General Election or second referendum. Questions for Chuka can be emailed to chukaevent2019@gmail.com.

Tickets can be booked here at an early bird special rate of £10 (tickets on the door are subject to availability and priced at £12).
