Event description
Workshop for for-profit and nonprofit enterprises on valuing social and environmental impact, and calculating Social Return on Investment.

About this Event

Purpose:

Impact monetization or impact valuation is gaining attention in today's business, investing, government and nonprofit circles. But it is controversial, because it can quite easily lead to a misleading result. It's crucial that those interested in using it, and those seeking to critically interpret results, understand how to do it right.

Social Value International (SVI) is the international standard body for impact valuation. SVI has stewarded the impact monetization methodology known as Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis since 2007, and has trained thousands of practitioners in a tried-and-tested methodology that can be assured by a third party. This is a course in SVI's Social Return on Investment Methodology.

Participants in this course will receive an introduction to social and environmental impact analysis and will practice applying it to a case of their own choosing. Various fields - including accounting, economics, evaluation, finance, environmental science, social science, data science and entrepreneurship - have developed methods to help understand and account for the social and environmental impact of private business, investment, non-profit, and governmental activities. This course presents the methodology distilled from these interdisciplinary fields for how to account for and value "externalities" experienced by non-owner stakeholders.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Know the steps to construct a sound analysis of impact.
  • Understand how to calculate Social Return on Investment (SROI) and Social Internal Rate of Return (SIRR).

About the Trainers:

This event is brought to you by SVT Group, Ecotone Analytics, and Social Value US, the American chapter of Social Value International (SVI).

SVT Group is a pioneering impact management firm. We specialize in strategy, design and implementation for organizations and their investors working to shift environmental and social systems at scale. "How can we catalyze adoption of our model across our industry? How can we ensure the integrity of our mission as we scale? How can we get the best outcomes for each dollar we spend? How can we grow and diversify our funding?" These are some of the questions we've helped our 100+ clients answer since our founding in 2001, including CalPERS Environmental Investment Advisor, Yo Yo Ma, and Fair Trade USA.

Ecotone Analytics’ mission is to help clients scale their social and environmental impact by communicating impact value to stakeholders and investors. The firm's vision is a world where using evidence-based interventions, organizations can accurately account for the social and environmental benefit they’re creating, and communicate that value to investors, donors, and the public. They specialize in research-based and high value communication approaches to their impact consulting.

Social Value International is a global network of 2000 practitioners worldwide working "to change the way society accounts for value." All too often key decisions about resources and policies are made using a limited economic concept of value, which fails to consider important effects on people and the environment. As the gap between rich and poor increases and the effects of climate change become more apparent, our work has never been more urgent. SVI works with our members to embed core principles for social value measurement and analysis, to refine and share practice, and to build a powerful movement of like-minded people to influence policy. This pioneering community is represented by 23 national networks, with members from 45 countries who are drawn from a huge range of different sectors and disciplines. Our goal at Social Value International is to support, connect, and represent our members through training, knowledge-sharing and networking.

Social Value International is much more than a professional network. Together, we are building a movement for change - join us! http://socialvalueus.org/
