REALTOR® University Speaker Series:
Impact of Student Debt on Consumer Spending and Saving:Estimates from the Consumer Expenditure Survey
Speaker: Dr. Geoffrey Paulin
Senior Economist, Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey Program
In this presentation, Dr. Geoffrey Paulin will present data on student loan balances for young single adults and how the repayment of this debt affects their incomes, consumer expenditures, and savings, including homeownership rates. Dr. Paulin’s analysis is based on data for which collection has recently started in the Consumer Expenditure Survey, a rich dataset that is the source for other critical statistics such as the Consumer Price Index. In view of the growing importance of student debt, the Bureau of Labor Statistics started collecting data on them in 2013, so they can be linked to consumer spending and saving at the family--or in this case, individual--level.
Dr. Geoffrey Paulin is Senior Economist in the Consumer Expenditure Program of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. His prolific and data-drive research on consumer spending appears in many publications. For example, his articles in the Monthly Labor Review (MLR) include topics such as consumer spending among age groups (single-young adults, baby boomers), education groups (college-age students and non-students), and ethnic groups (Hispanics); consumer expenditures for food, health insurance, and travel; and poverty measurements. Links to these and other examples of Dr. Paulin’s research as published in the MLR can be found at http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/author/paulin-geoffrey-d.htm. Dr. Paulin holds at Ph.D in Economics from The George Washington University (GWU); he also holds and an undergraduate degree from GWU in the same discipline.
Light lunch will be served from 11:45 a.m.
