Event description

Description

From Ted Talks to editorials to a bestselling book, Anand Giridharadas has emerged as an influential critic of philanthropy and many other approaches to social change. He claims that many approaches “preserve the status quo” and may hide the root causes of problems. What can we learn from Giridharadas? Where do we agree? Disagree? And what does it mean for our work? How would we respond to his challenges? And why is his work gaining so much attention now?

This summer, Impact Hub, MSP, invites you to an informal and friendly book group to discuss Giridharadas’ book, Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World, as well as some other lively responses to his work.

We will be meeting over the lunch period, 11:45-1:00 on Tuesday, June 11th, and Tuesday, June 25th. Bring your own lunch. An RSVP is helpful but feel free to come even if you don’t RSVP. Also, a short summary of the reading will be available at the start of the conversation--so feel free to come, even if you aren’t sure if you can finish the reading. Come to one session or both.

A copy of the book will be available for browsing at Impact Hub, and those who RSVP, will also receive links to some of the lively conversations that his work has generated.

The book group is one example of ways Impact Hub MSP is continuing to strengthen its culture of community-building, learning, and engagement with movements that are shaping our fields and work. The convener is Impact Hub member Paul Schadewald who works in the Kofi Annan Institute for Global Citizenship at Macalester College.
