Description

A one-day conference that brings together practitioners and experts from a variety of backgrounds to engage in strategic conversations regarding the state of water litigation, with a particular focus on work that can affect communities in California's Central Valley.

We hope the day will offer space to step back together, connect over shared goals, and think critically about the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Financial assistance is available for hotel and travel costs for attendees employed by nonprofit and legal services organizations. We generally provide financial assistance on a first come/first served basis, according to the order in which requests are received. To apply, please email dnesbit@impactfund.org prior to 07.05.19.

Here is the Provisional Agenda for the Day:

8:30-9:30: Breakfast

9:30-9:45: Welcome

9:45-10:00: Introductions

10:00-11:15: Session 1: One Piece of the Puzzle: Litigation’s Role in Advocacy Efforts

Topic: Join a panel of litigators, community organizers, and community members to discuss the role of strategic litigation in larger organizing and advocacy strategies. How do community needs translate to effective litigation? When are lawsuits necessary and when can they be counter-productive?

Moderator: Marisol Aguilar, California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc.

11:30-12:45: Session 2: Anatomy of Successful Water Litigation

Topic: An update on the landscape of clean water litigation, including analysis of case strategies, thoughts on future innovation, and recent updates relevant to practitioners fighting for clean, affordable drinking water in California.

Topic:All attendees will be invited to share their current projects, potential resources, opportunities for collaboration, and plans for next steps after the Forum.

Moderator: Colin Bailey, Environmental Justice Coalition for Water

2:15-4:30 [including a break]: Session 4: Open Table Discussions

Topic: An open, lightly structured space for attendees to brainstorm and discuss current issues, share strategies, and identify spaces for collaboration. [Topics to be finalized soon, but may include 1) voting rights and water districts, 2) access to data 3) potential advocacy pressure points, 4) the upcoming Cal. Gov. Code. § 11135 regulations update, 5) SGMA, and 6) relationship building between attorneys and communities]
