Description
Welcome to the registration page for the 4th Integrated Mathematical Oncology (IMO) workshop. This workshop is designed to motivate and facilitate a hands-on modeling experience focused on the role of viruses in cancer. The workshop is comprised of both an educational event and competition. The workshop will divide into multiple teams integrating clinical, experimental and theoretical members that will integrate their energies to develop and implement a mathematical model focussed on the role of viruses in cancer. The teams are expected to come up with a model, solve it and give a presentation all within 4.5 intense days.
For the first time the IMO workshop will be jointly run with Moffitt's Center for Infection Research in Cancer (CIRC). The initial 0.5 day of the meeting will consist of a "getting to know you" session that involves both a speed dating cocktail hour (with heavy h'ordeurves) and a poster session giving both internal and external participants a chance to showcase their own work. The start of day 2 will consist of a mini conference to bring participants up to speed on the role of viruses in cancer by some of the top experts in the field. The remaining 3.5 days will be dedicated to the hands on part of the workshop.
Several independent judges will view the closing presentations and decide the winning team. This year we are very pleased to have the director of CIRC as a key judge, Dr. Anna Giuliano and our newly appointed assoictate Cancer Center Diretor, Dr. John Cleveland. To facilitate integration and motivate participation we are offering an Amazon gift voucher to active participants of the winning team and to the runner up team. In addition, to facilitate further development of the winning project we are offering a $50K pilot grant to the leaders of the winning team.
For the 2nd year running we are offering travel awards for external participation. Each award will cover flight + accommodation + per diem for up to 5 nights and allow for both national and international scientists to participate in this unique hands on educational event. If you are either a PhD student, Postdoctoral student or junioir faculty with a passion for research and a desire to better understand cancer then please apply during the registration process. Please note: the travel awards are extremely limited and will be offered on a competitive basis, application does not gaurantee participation. If you are able to cover your own expenses, please indicate this during the registration process.
The opening presentation on Monday will summarise what is expected of the teams and serve to motivate the subsequent hands on model development sessions. Participation in the workshop requires registration in order to generate the teams and give numbers for the food and beverages we are providing throughout the workshop.
Please note
TRAVEL AWARD APPLICATION WILL BE CLOSING ON MONDAY 20/10/14. AWARD WINNERS WILL BE CONTACTED ON 24/10/14
What
Various viruses will be considered including HPV (multiple sites) and HIV, from the basic biological to the epidemiological understanding and how best to treat cancers that derive from these viruses. More details on specific theam focuses will be available soon.
