Gala Reception and Preview Exhibit

6-9pm

$75 Per Person

Conversation with Photographer Jim Lommasson

Featuring Music by Salaam Band

You are invited to preview a special photographic exhibit of What We Carried: Fragments from the Cradle of Civilization, a collaborative project with the Iraqi community and award winning photographer, Jim Lommasson. Jim Lommasson has photographed those few important personal items that have survived the long journey from Iraq to the U.S.  The exhibit tells the story of these journeys through photographs of the things that are so special that they were carried all the way here.

Meet Jim Lommasson and the project participants while enjoying Middle Eastern music by Salaam Band and foods from Juliana Restaurant, with wine, beer, and other refreshments.

Salaam Band's deep knowledge of Eastern and Western styles gives it the flexibility to move effortlesslessly between genres.  Iraqi-American band leader Dena El Saffar's compositions take advantage of her own eclectic musical upbringing to create a sound rooted in traditional maqam.

Funds from this event will support the Iraqi Mutual Aid Society, an Illinois non-profit providing social services and other programming to assist refugees from Iraq, Syria and the Middle East transition to life in the United States.  Your donations are greatly appreciated.

More information is at www.iraqimutualaid.org.

Iraqi Mutual Aid Society

The Iraqi Mutual Aid Society (IMAS) was founded in 2009 as a secular non-profit organization by newly-arrived Iraqi refugees in response to the challenges faced as they adapt to their new lives in America.  The mission of IMAS has since expanded to all refugees, and includes fostering their well-being and self-sufficiency by easing their transition to life in the United States.  IMAS obtained 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in 2010. Its Immigration Legal Services Program (ILSP) was recognized by the Board of Immigration Appeals in 2013.  IMAS offices are on the north east side of Chicago, close to the community we serve.

IMAS provides services to Iraqi and other Middle Eastern refugees, immigrants, asylees, and Special Immigrant Visa holders regardless of religion, ethnicity, gender, or family size.  In the last two years, IMAS has served more than 578 households, including over 830 individuals.   IMAS provides Case Management, Adult Education Guidance, Child & Family Services, Senior Services, and Community Engagement and Empowerment Programs.
