Description

Contagion!!! Solving Biomedical Mysteries

WINTER BREAK CLASS - JAN 2ND, 3RD, & 4TH

Put on a lab coat and join us on this hands-on awesome biomedical adventure in the amazing world of microbiology as we experiment with what’s really in your lunch! You will use advanced lab equipment like Spectrophotometers’ to measure bacteria and protein concentrations and learn laboratory sterile techniques. You will discover your “Yogurtness” by using serial dilutions and micro-pipetting with your favorite yogurt.

Next as a food safety inspector, you will compare the diversity of proteins found in different fish samples and perform a protein gel electrophoresis using trout, salmon and catfish to prove how some fish are closely related and if a Danville restaurant is really serving expensive tuna or if it’s just inexpensive catfish at tuna prices.

Finally, as a field scientist for the CDC, you mission is to save the world from a pandemic outbreak using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, ELISA. But first you need to use your new lab skills to determine if you have become infected by the outbreak. You may test negative but what about the person standing next to you? So on the last day we will see who has been infected and who will live to see another day. And we’ll put our samples tho’ a microplate reader

This same clinical test is used in medical facilities or by agencies like the CDC. Using special microplate strips, antigens and antibodies you will detect a simulated infection using a spec capture protocol which is also used to detect mold toxins, viruses in cats, heartworms in dogs, illegal drugs, or GMO’s. We will explore the immune system, particularly about antigen-antibody interactions and the unique properties of antibodies that have revolutionized modern medicine, biotechnology, and research.

While performing these activities, students are exposed to NGSS Life and Physical Science DCIs: LS1, LS2, LS3, LS4 and PS2. This activity has been aligned with all published National Standards, Science and Engineering Practices and common core standards.

This class is perfect for students that have already taken an Imagineering Biotechnology class, but it is not required.

This class is developed and taught by Linda Bandrowski, AP Science Teacher at Monte Vista High School.
