The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation (SRVEF) is proud to introduce Imagineering, a beyond school enrichment program for SRVUSD students in grades 4 to 7. The goal of Imagineering is to spark student interest in choosing STEM classes in middle and high school with the ultimate goal of identifying more STEM majors who will ultimately become highly sought after talent in the US corporate workplace.
The program consists of seven (4) themes, each of which is taught in four (4) one-hour classes. The seven themes are: Biotechnology, Net Logo Coding, 3D Printing, Bioinformatics, Animation, Chemistry and Robotics. These courses are designed to provide a serious, but enjoyable, science experience to supplement the science exposure elementary and middle school students receive at school. Currently these classes are targeted for beginners, but as more children cycle through the program, there will be level 2 and 3 classes offered in these content areas as well.
The curriculum for each theme is developed by a master teacher, who also teaches the class. Each class is supported by student mentors, middle and high school students who are knowledgeable in the content and skills involved in the program. Mentors are provided in a 4:1 ratio, with a mentor at each table group to provide individualized instruction. Imagineering is a hands-on program with students learning practical application within each of the themes.
This class is developed and taught by Linda Bandrowski, Science Teacher at Monte Vista High School.
Biotechnology Bootcamp for students in 5th to 8th grade only
Join us on a journey into the amazing world of Biotechnology! This summer camp gives students a opportunity to examine the impact that Biotechnology has on Science today while doing engaging inquiry based experiments. First they will learn about ancient biotechnology and make root beer and cheese. We will learn about biological systems with real laboratory safety protocol to modify and clone glowing genes. Students will learn laboratory techniques including pipetting and gel electrophoresis to solve a crime scene: The Candy Caper, where they extract the dyes from their favorite candy and separate it on a gel. They will become CDC Disease scientists as they figure out the origin of a “contagious” disease. Then using real DNA as evidence students will play the role of forensics crime scene investigators to figure out for themselves “who done it?”. The protocol is taught within a forensic scenario that is commonly known as DNA Fingerprinting. Students learn to use equipment that is commonly used in real biotechnology labs to obtain and manipulate DNA samples, while engaged in “solving a crime”. On the last day students can celebrate a great biotech week with a root beer ice cream float!
