Event description
Manson and More - Killer Cults and Cult Movies a talk by Ian Cooper | dinner at EYE | Screening: The Manson Family - Jim Van Bebber

About this Event

18:00 - 19:15 - Manson and More - Killer Cults and Cult Movies Talk by Ian Cooper You honestly have to wonder – what would low-rent exploitation producers have done in the early 70's without Charles Manson? – Trash Film Guru (2013)

Writer Ian Cooper has spent many years watching everything ever made on the Manson murders, culminating in the definitive Manson Family media book: The Manson Family on Film and Television. In 2019, 50 years after the murders, Cooper will visit Imagine for a talk on the lasting influence The Manson Family and other ‘killer’ cults like Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate have had on (genre) film, ranging from classic 70's ‘mansonploitation’ (Sweet Savior, The Cult), documentaries (Manson) and television (Helter Skelter) as well as more recent titles like The Invitation, Charlie Says and The Endless. The talk will discuss the rise of alternative religions and cults in 1960's California, and how their horrific and much-publicised crimes turned The Manson Family and their charismatic leader into celebrities themselves. In collaboration with Miskatonic Institute, London.

19:15 - 19:45 - Dinner @ Imagine Festivalcafé – EYE

19:45 - 21:20 - The Manson Family - Jim Van Bebber (1997)

A group of hippies celebrates their summer of love with sex & drugs & rock ‘n’ roll under the watchful eye of guru Charles Manson. Until Manson convinces them to commit one of the most notorious mass murders in American history, with Sharon Tate, the then pregnant wife of Roman Polanski, as its most famous victim. Raw, unpolished cult film plunges the viewer deep into the insanity of Charles Manson and his followers.

Insane cult leader Charles Manson (1934-2017) is the subject of two feature films this year, including one by Quentin Tarantino. Underground filmmaker Jim Van Bebber already made a both defiant and shocking attempt to interpret the phenomenon in 1997. It cost him no less than fifteen years to realise his pet project, but the result is worth it. Van Bebber focuses not so much on Manson himself as on his followers, and in the gritty style of 70’s low budget exploitation films he manages to depict the madness that turned sex orgies in to an orgy of violence like no other.

This event is part of the Imagine Film Festival that takes place in EYE from April 10 to 20. Want to know more about Imagine, check our website >
