Description

Images are crucial to world politics. Could we imagine the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11 without the videos of the planes crashing into the towers? Or the Iraq War without the iconic Abu Ghraib photos? Images “speak” security in distinct ways and call for the development of new theoretical approaches and methodological strategies.

Lene Hansen is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Copenhagen. She is the author of numerous articles and Security as Practice: Discourse Analysis and the Bosnian War and (with Barry Buzan) The Evolution of International Security Studies. She is the director of the research project Bodies as Battleground: Gender Images and International Security.
