I'm Your Allly Campaign Fundraiser
Friday, August 1, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
If the world ever had a coming OUT year, 2013 was it. A total of 17 countries in the world extended their civil liberties and enshrined EQUALITY for LGBT people!
However, as some people got their freedom, some countries; particularly in Africa, strengthened their homphobic and unjust laws. LGBT people in Africa live in constant fear for their lives. They face government-sponsored homophobia, life in prison and legalized death sentences for engaging in loving, consensual relationships. In South African Black Townships, Black Lesbian women are victims of corrective rape aimed at curing them of their sexual orientation. SEE our Ptomo Video HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYQyPPdOz54
Because of the lack of both government and business funding, we have started this fundraiser. We hope to raise enough funds ($10,875) to shoot out South African PSA (public Service Announcement) and Print Campaigns that will be distrubuted to TV braodcasters, Print and Online media platforms.
The law in South Africa is on our side and in order to enforce it, we are asking you to help us by donating as generously as you can. I believe that the extension of LGBT rights; within the context of both women & children's rights, is the single most important issue of this African generation and your donation can help tip the scales towards LGBT-affirmativeness.
THE CAMPAIGN'S IMPACT...
The first impact you will help establish is that of educating people on the largest scale than that which was ever possible. People will learn that LGBT people, in terms of protection & equality under the law, deserve the same as everyone else. More importanly, that having LGBT rights enshrined in law does not threated the lives and livelihoods of the non-LGBT community as has been advocated by most governments and Clergy in the continent.
When people understand the above, they will be much more open and able to accept LGBT people as people who do not pose a threat to their "way of life" and that of their children. And a new culture of acceptance will begin to flourish. The ALLY Workshops will be very instrumental in accomplishing a culture of acceptance. As the workshops are primarily designed for young adults (High Schools & Universities/Colleges), our hope is to foster this culture at a critical time when young people are 'finding' themselves and are able to sharpen their worldviews.
Possibly the single greatest visible effect of LGBT Africans. We live in FEAR! Fear of being bullied in schools. Fear of being kicked out at home. Fear of mob brutality. Fear of corrective rape. Fear of imprisonment. Fear of a death sentence. This directly affects the quality of lives of millions of LGBT Africans! HELP US STOP THE FEAR!
In the long run, we hope that this will EXTEND to...
Your support of this campaign would mean that you were one of the people that ended a reign of legal terror of a people. You would be helping advocate for legal equality. Without selling you pipe dreams as far as our capacity is concerned, I must say that although this is our ULTIMATE goal, it is a journey. A journey of support over a long time. Our realistic hope is achieving this goal is that, in the long term, we hope to get into partnership with (foreign) governments/organizations in order to continue, in a sustainable way, this mission to make Africa LGBT-affirmative.
With the above-mentioned achieved, this would be the perfect space we all wish for. A continent filled with people who enjoy, not just legal equality, but social equality as well. This is the noble pursuit of nations - including 1st world nations. Utopias might only exist in theory, but we can all strive to be as happy and fulfilled as the Danish :)
The impact of the campaign is determined LARGELY by your contribution and continued support. Your contrubution is not just financial, it is about service too!
