Description

ILLUSTRATION LAB, Levels I + II

Grades 8+ (younger participants will be considered with recommendation)

Mondays, 3:00-5:00pm

9 Sessions: February 5th-April 9th (no class on February 19th, optional snow date April 23)

Tuition: $195, sliding scale and payment plans are available*

Illustrators shape and reflect how we see ourselves; they communicate universal concerns, issues, and challenges we can relate to. Illustration employs visual communications strategies to convey points of view, enhance the meaning of a story, or expose a truth.

In this class, students will examine the multifaceted field of Illustration, and discover how the class remains democratic, versatile, inclusive, and motivates action. Demonstrations, slides, discussion, and reviews of the student’s own works will be used to teach students how to better articulate and reflect on their growth and practice. Students will learn to compose, revise and edit their own projects, and create a body of work for their portfolios.

Student activities and outcomes will include:

  • Learning techniques of sketching, drawing, watercolor, inking, and color theory.

  • Inventing, creating, and using images for problem-solving and social engagement.

  • Discovering career pathways within the Arts and Illustration fields.

This nine-week lab/class will feature four to five main projects designed to engage students’ skills, technique, diversity of content, problem-solving, and public engagement through creative practice. Projects will include poster design connecting history & industry, maritime illustration, symbols and letterforms, personal narrative, and a public project to be displayed on Main Street in Biddeford. Projects and skill-building is developed in alignment with current state of Maine educational priorities.**

This class will be taught by Alex Rheault, who is an assistant professor of art at Maine College of Art and an assistant lecturer in UNE’s Department of Creative and Fine Arts. Community service, challenging experiences, and learning are at the core of Rheault’s life, art, and passions. Alex exhibits, writes, and curates locally, and ‘draws with a brush in the language of collage.’ Her drawing topics/subjects include transformation, the body, poached images, images from her photographs of found objects, toys and junk, things with wheels, and clothes.
