Illustration Agents & Art Reps Panel:Putting Your Best Portfolio Forward
Brooks Sherman, Literary Agent at The Bent Agency, Elena Giovinazzo, Literary Agent at Pippin Properties, Inc., and Justin Rucker, Art rep at Shannon Associates will give a brief overview of their agencies, and discuss what makes a good portfolio.
Brooks Sherman is a literary agent with The Bent Agency, which has represented over 30 New York Times bestselling titles, with many more on USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and other regional lists. He is seeking picture books by author/illustrators with an emphasis on humor, middle grade novels of all genres (but particularly fantasy, adventure, and contemporary), and would love to get his hands on some dark and/or funny contemporary young adult projects. Some recent sales include Becky Albertalli's YA contemporary novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (Balzer + Bray, Winter 2015), Adam Silvera's YA novel More Happy Than Not (Soho Teen, Fall 2015), Heidi Schulz’s middle grade adventure HOOK’S REVENGE (Disney*Hyperion, September 2014) and her picture book GIRAFFES RUIN EVERYTHING (Bloomsbury Kids, Fall 2015), Emma Trevayne’s YA sci-fi thriller CHORUS (Running Press Teens, May 2014) and her middle grade Victorian fantasy FLIGHTS AND CHIMES AND MYSTERIOUS TIMES (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, May 2014), author/illustrator Sam Garton’s picture book (Balzer + Bray, April 2014), and novelist Sean Ferrell’s debut picture book (Atheneum Books for Young Readers, Spring 2015). Brooks is active on Twitter, where he tweets publishing news, advice, and horrible puns from @byobrooks.
Elena Giovinazzo joined the Pippin Properties team in June of 2009. Having begun her publishing career in subsidiary rights, moving on to children's book marketing with a shift in audio, she realized thaat a position in agenting would enable her to continue to be involved in the many aspects of publishing about which she is so passionate from one place. She is thrilled to be pursuing her love of children's literature and the industry from her seat at Pippin and especially enjoys the treasure hunt that is sorting through the daily query emails.
