As the 99th General Assembly convenes and Illinois inaugurates a new Governor, the state's budget crisis is at the top of the agenda. If spending on services in FY2016 is held constant in non-inflation adjusted dollars at FY2015 levels, the state’s accumulated deficit in its General Fund will almost double, increasing from an estimated $6.8 billion in FY2015 to $12.7 billion by the end of FY2016. In addition, Illinois faces the worst public pension shortfall in the U.S., with a estimated deficit of $111 billion.

The Union League Club of Chicago's Public Affairs Committee and the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability (CTBA) invite you to attend a complimentary breakfast forum on Wednesday, January 21 examining these daunting challenges. Moderated by CTBA Executive Director Ralph Martire, our forum will feature two state lawmakers offering their views on Illinois' budgetary and fiscal dilemmas and possible solutions: State Senator Don Harmon (D-39th) and State Senator Matt Murphy (R-27th).

The Illinois Fiscal Forum begins with registration and continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m., followed by the program at 8:00 and adjournment by 9:30. Following the presentation and commentary by Senators Harmon and Murphy, we will open the floor for questions from the audience. PLEASE NOTE: while this event is offered on a complimentary basis, advance registration is required; also, the Union League Club of Chicago maintains a “business casual” dress code (i.e., no jeans or denim).
