Topics will include wills and living trusts, probate, power of attorney, advanced medical directive, new tax laws, and using charitable gift planning to maximize your income and minimize your income taxes. Janet will be joined by University of Illinois Foundation Gift Planning Advisor, Bill Russell.  Bill will provide additional information on how you can incorporate the University of Illinois into your estate plan. As well as share how you, and the university, can benefit from a Charitable Gift Annuity, Charitable Remainder Unit Trust and additional planned giving vehicles.  This evening will be interactive, fun, and productive as personal examples and a wealth of experience is shared with our guests. Not sure if this seminar is for you?

Do you have possessions and people or organizations that you care about? Estate planning is something most people consider at some point in their lives; the sooner you start thinking about it, the better. Waiting for the “proper time” may lessen your opportunity to ensure that your plans are carried out according to your wishes.

Have you already created an estate plan, but haven’t reviewed it lately? Even if you already have an estate plan set up, it’s important to review it on a regular basis to account for changes in law or the acquisition or disposition of assets.

Janet is an expert trust attorney who has worked with best-selling financial author and popular P.B.S. host Suze Orman for many years. In 1987 Janet and Suze first went into business together. Today, Janet acts as her personal trust attorney and consultant. Janet has been interviewed and extensively quoted regarding trusts and wills in Orman's books, You've Earned it Don't Lose It, The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, and The Road to Wealth. The estate planning chapter in The Road to Wealth was rated “the best resource on estate planning for the consumer” by Consumer Reports. She also collaborated with Orman on The Suze Orman Protection Portfolio, a patented software system that allows you to personalize, create and store essential documents; a product that has been successfully on the market for over twelve years now. She has presented estate planning seminars with Orman for public television in Detroit, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Colorado, and Champaign-Urbana. In addition, Janet is the author of several O-Magazine articles and has testified as an expert witness regarding trusts and conservatorships.

A Champaign native, Janet graduated from the University of Illinois Laboratory High School and went on to receive a degree in clinical psychology from Stanford at the age of nineteen. She then obtained a law degree from Hastings College of the Law and began her own law firm in 1979. Janet’s firm is located in Emeryville, California and specializes in trust and estate planning and the law of non-profit corporations. Janet works with the funding raising teams of The President’s Council of the University of Illinois Foundation, the JS Dobrovolny Chair in Entrepreneurial Engineering and the Dean of the Department of Social Work's fund raising committee. She is also the chairperson for the Professional Advisory Committee of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Legal Counsel for V-Day, a Board Member for the Vedika Global Ayurvedic School, and Legal Counsel for the Silicon Valley Heart Research Institute.
