Event description

Description

On 13 November 2018, the Intelligent Lighting Institute (ILI) of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) organises the 2018 edition of its annual public outreach event. During this event we highlight recent developments in responsible research & innovation in science & technology in light & intelligent lighting and its applications in, for instance, health & well-being.

During the event the audience will also be able to get better informed about recent, current, and upcoming research & innovation projects carried out by researchers related to ILI by means of a series of poster presentations.

Program (tentative)

9:30
Registration with coffee/tea in Natlab (Plaza Futura) on Strijp-S

9:45
Opening & Welcome
by prof. dr. I.E.J. (Ingrid) Heynderickx, scientific director of ILI

10:00
Presentation on "Bright Environments" research program
by dr. T. (Tanır) Özçelebi, program manager

10:40
Pitch presentations by researchers (PhD).

10:50
Invited talk entitled "The internet connectivity to the luminaire will change the game"
by Mr. Walter Werner (Werner Management Services)

"For the next generation of connected lighting a number of of crucial questions need to be answered: Why is internet connectivity different from classic controls connectivity? How are necessary performance requirements met using technology provided by the OpenAIS project? When an IoT- enabled refridgerator profit from ordering some milk and eggs, what does a luminaire profit from IoT connectivity?"

11:30
Presentation on contribution to GLOW respectively TU/e Innovation Space
by dr. P.R. (Philip) Ross respectively dr. P.H. (Elke) den Ouden

12:00
Lunch and Poster Presentations

13:00
Presentation on "Light by Design" research program
by dr. J.H.M. (Jan) ten Thije Boonkkamp, program manager

13:40
Pitch presentations by researchers (PhD)

13:50
Invited talk entitled "Freeform Optics in Imaging Optics"
by Mr. Stefan Baumer (TNO)

"Next to illumination optics freeform optics are used in imaging optics as well. However the design approach for (freeform) optical systems in imaging and sensor optics is usually quite different. Due to the shrinking size of modern light sources for illumination applications the methods for imaging and non-imaging design might grow closer together. In the presentation a view on imaging optics design with freeform lenses is given and it is discussed where similarities in the design approaches can be found."

14:30
Presentation on "Sound Lighting" research program
by prof. dr. Y.A.W. (Yvonne) de Kort, program manager

15:10
Pitch presentations by researchers (PhD)

15:30
Invited talk entitled "Light, thermophysiology and beyond"
by prof. dr. W.D. (Wouter) van Marken Lichtenbelt (Maastricht University, professor Ecological Energetics and Health)

"The indoor environment affects our comfort and health. With respect to the thermal conditions we earlier showed that deviations from the human thermal neutral zone increases metabolic health (such as energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity). Recently we showed that light conditions (intensity and color) can significantly influence our body temperatures and the perception of the thermal environment.
Light and ambient temperature seem to work in concert to bring about the comfort experience. With the right color and intensity of light, the thermal comfort range can be increased, thereby creating a healthier environment. Moreover, if mild cold and limited heat no longer require heating or cooling, considerable energy savings in buildings can be realized.
