Description:

Supercharge Your Organization With Collaborative Management Historically, businesses have been run as mini-empires: “leadership” at the top dictates their vision and commands and when misalignment ensues, they use their positional power to direct their abuse onto those doing the work. Over time, this creates sluggish, reactive organizations that spend more time in meetings discussing how to do or undo something than actually having the clarity and support to do what needs to be done in the first place.

Non-collaborative systems are bureaucratic and prone to waste; they produce endless bottlenecks, and create a culture in which rework is expected rather than analyzed and improved. Such systems tend to hide problems rather than surface and solve them at their root. They foster a culture of learned helplessness whereby staff waits for direction rather than takes action. They become timid and risk-averse and ironically, it is this risk-aversion that actually leaves them vulnerable for even more risk, generating a vicious work cycle.

In contrast, a collaborative system enables a team to understand their purpose, giving them the clarity needed to understand their role in achieving their goals, makes evident what work needs to be completed, by when, and for whom, and normalizes the understanding around what a quality product looks like. Collaborative teams act responsibly when both problems and opportunities arise, reducing their own cognitive overhead, ultimately producing higher quality work and leaving themselves with enough slack to improve and sustainably innovate.
The problem with most organizations today is that they are laden with 100+ years of industrial revolution- and feudal-thinking to overcome.

In this class, we will cover how to build a high-performance organization by removing the bureaucracy and bottlenecks inherent in top-down, command-and-control, ego-driven management.

Topics explored will include:
  • The importance of constancy of purpose;
  • How to build systems of collaboration;
  • How to build a culture of curiosity and problem solving;
  • How to build a system that fosters good actors; and
  • How to remove psychological fear from the workplace.
Should this sound like a series of “soft skills” to you, consider this: without agency people will always wait for direction. They will not act. They will not point out or solve problems. They will not seek improvement. They will have little choice but to perform as “bad actors” simply because the system gives them no opportunity but to act otherwise.

This is the real work of business and of management: to have the courage to provide quality work and products the first time. No re-work. No bugs. No defects.

This can only be accomplished when leadership understands the correlation between a healthy - collaborative - working environment and creating the right product.

Take the class and become...supercharged!
