Event description
Please join the Illinois Human Rights Commission as we celebrate 40 years of Civil Rights in Illinois.

About this Event

On December 6, 1979, the then Governor James R. Thompson signed into law the Illinois Human Rights Act (Act). The Act created the broadest civil rights coverage for the people of Illinois in the history of the State with a bifurcated enforcement apparatus: (1) a Department to investigate Charges of Discrimination; and (2) a Commission to adjudicate complaints of civil rights violations in education, employment, financial credit, housing, and public accommodations.

On November 12, 2019, the Illinois Human Rights Commission (IHRC) will host a summit to celebrate 40 years of the Illinois Human Rights Act (Summit). At the Summit, IHRC will honor trailblazers in the field of human rights and hold panel discussions on a host of issues front and center in the Illinois human rights debate, such as race and disability and policing, LGBTQ+ discrimination in Illinois, and sexual harassment in the workplace.

*3 hours of CLE credit pending for Illinois attorneys
