Description

ILLINOIS GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY SOCIETY

Presents:

2017 Fall Conference: The Promise of Real Play Group Psychotherapy

12.5 CE hours available for Psychologists, LCSWs, LCPCs, LPCs, and CGPs

Description:

Real Play Group Psychotherapy engages our inner actor and observer at the same time. In this way, we are enabled to see deeper layers of our own process, as well as the process of others.

So often our opportunities for growth come in the form of those we struggle with, and the Real Play is a unique way to work through some of those issues in ourselves. This is a powerful option for supervision groups in which one is experiencing countertransference as one mindfully embodies their challenging client.

The Real Play format is useful in dual relationship environments, such as teaching a Group Psychotherapy course where the experience of being in a group is a component of the class. Group members can maintain some sense of boundaries with classmates and professors, while still doing work at a meaningful level.

In a college counseling center where students may be hesitant to share too much about themselves directly, this could offer the opportunity to do some deeper work – once removed. This group format allows us to engage in learning environments with an increased sense of safety while still accessing core issues.

About our Featured Presenter

Dr. Katie Steele, PhD, CGP, FAGPA was a solo practitioner for 20 years in South Bend, Indiana, running four interpersonal process groups a week. In addition to her group practice where she currently runs two groups per week, she is Clinical Director at Samaritan Center in Elkhart, Indiana. Dr. Steele is also an Approved Consultant in EMDR and Certified in Brainwave Optimization. She is passionate about training, both for herself and in training, supervising, and mentoring others.

Learning Objectives

- Identify ways in which the Real Play can have an impact on countertransferences

- Identify three reasons why group members might be more willing to engage in Real Play Psychotherapy

- List three settings in which the Real Play may offer unique opportunities for working with group process

This conference will consist of didactic presentations and experiential components such as process groups. Experiential learning can be tremendously valuable in one’s professional and personal growth as well as emotionally evocative and, at times, challenging. One can be left with much to notice and contemplate.
