Description

What is iGEM?

iGEM, the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition, is an annual event open to teams of high school and college students from around the world. It's kind of a big deal, with teams working all year to design their own biological system to solve real-world problems. The BUGSS team, the Baltimore BioCrew, is a team of high school students from throughout Baltimore city, Maryland, and northern Virginia. Their common goal is to use biology to improve the world.

What does the BioCrew do?

For the past three years, the BioCrew engineered bacteria to break down plastic that contaminates the Inner Harbor, and engineered bacteria to produce a protein for fast blood clotting and wound repair. The team works in the lab every Saturday from March through October. At the end, they have an amazing project, and they may even be able to show off their project at the The iGEM Jamboree competition in Boston in November. Last year’s BioCrew team won a bronze medal, and this year we’re shooting for a gold medal!!

Why should I do it?

This is a unique and amazing experience for students to engage in hands-on science, to get excited about careers in science, and to learn how to use science for the benefit of us all. Learn advanced molecular lab techniques, math modeling, wiki creation and HTML coding, and the safety and ethical dimensions of using biology to improve our world.

Excited yet?

Awesome, join us for this info session to learn more and to get all of your questions answered!
