Description

iEngage: Foundations for a New Relationship with Israel

A 9-session course from the Shalom Hartman Institute

Sundays from 10 am–12 noon, June 4-25, July 16-30, August 20-27 (RSVP by May 25 - Space Limited)

Taught by Rabbi Stephanie Bernstein

Temple Rodef Shalom is excited to offer iEngage, a learning experience that seeks to create a new narrative regarding the significance of Israel for Jewish life. The goal of iEngage is to renew and reframe the relationship between Israel and world Jewry, elevating the existing discourse from one with a crisis-based focus to one rooted in Jewish values and ideas. iEngage is a project of the Shalom Hartman Institute, a pluralistic center of research and education which works to deepen and elevate the quality of Jewish life in Israel and around the world. Working with the Hartman Institute, a team of internationally renowned scholars in the fields of Jewish studies, Middle East politics, and history created iEngage.

iEngage addresses core questions pertaining to the necessity and significance of the State of Israel. Given the nature of the discourse and discord within the American Jewish community concerning Israel, this course represents a shift from facts, policies and PR, to an opportunity to learn about Jewish values and possibilities that can shape our future relationship with Israel.

Through text-based learning and video interviews with scholars, we will convene a conversation about what it means to be a Jew in an age of Jewish sovereignty. We will explore the resulting ethical challenges and opportunities that face the State of Israel. The course responds to two core issues: Why do Jews need a Jewish State today? And can that State be a moral and democratic one?
