IELTS or the International English Language Testing system is one of the two most widely accepted Language Proficiency examinations which is conducted for aspirants looking to pursue their higher education from abroad or for candidates undergoing their immigration applications with foreign embassies.

The examination is valid in all the countries where English is the primary language of communication as well as instruction.

All those candidates who belong to a country where English is NOT the primary language of instruction need to appear for this exam if they wish to travel abroad for educational/ job/ immigration purposes. IELTS is conducted by two conducting bodies i.e. the British Council and the IDP Australia.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most popular high-stakes English language proficiency test for study, work and migration with more than two million tests taken in the past year. In Qatar people often process for the migration to the countries such as Canada, Australia, etc. IELTS is the first and the most important step to begin and complete the procedure for the PR of mentioned countries.

IELTS is one of the most sought after exam in language testing apart from PTE and TOEFL. IELTS is recognized by over 9,000 organizations worldwide, including educational institutions, employers, governments, immigration authorities and professional bodies. IELTS is accepted for both study and migration by governments in more countries than any other English language test. Choosing IELTS gives you more options for the future.

Universities, colleges, employers and immigration departments each set their own minimum IELTS score requirements.

There are 2 types of IELTS exam.

1. General – For migration/PR

2. Academic – For Higher studies

In Qatar almost 70 to 80% of the people are opting for general IELTS.

In each exam, 4 sessions are there

1. Reading

2. Writing

3. Speaking

4. Listening

Speaking and Listening are same for both the types (General & Academic), while Reading and Writing are different for each type of exam.

1. Test format – Listening

Time period - 30 minutes

You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions.

Assessors will be looking for evidence of your ability to understand the main ideas and detailed factual information, the opinions and attitudes of speakers, the purpose of an utterance and evidence of your ability to follow the development of ideas.

2. Test format – Reading

60 minutes

The Reading component consists of 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument and recognizing writers' opinions, attitudes and purpose.

This includes extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks and guidelines. These are materials you are likely to encounter on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment.

3. Test format – Writing

60 minutes

Topics are of general interest. There are two tasks:

Task 1 - you will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information, or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.

Task 2 - you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The essay can be fairly personal in style.

4. Test format – Speaking

11–14 minutes

The speaking component assesses your use of spoken English. Every test is recorded.

Part 1 - the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.

Part 2 - you will be given a card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic.

Part 3 - you will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes.
