Abstract: IEC 62368-1 is the (relatively!) new hazard-based safety standard for AV & ICT equipment scheduled to replace IEC 60065 (AV equipment) and IEC 60950-1 (IT/ICT equipment) in year 2019 for two large regions of the world. While its original development and subsequent initial steps towards adoption have taken many years, a considerable amount of progress has been made in the last couple of years to bring its widespread adoption closer to a reality, including publication of edition No. 2 of the standard as CSA/UL 62368-1 in Canada & U.S. and as EN 62368-1 in Europe, with the same formal transition date of June 2019 established in both regions. Still there remains more to be done for true global adoption and an effective transition to 62368-1 from the legacy standards, including acceptance of a Hybrid TRF under the IECEE CB Scheme to limit the amount of redundant testing/documentation required during the transition, and achieving some level of consensus on the application of the component/subassembly provisions in 62368-1 to legacy equipment, provisions that allow use of existing 60065 & 60950-1 component/subassembly certifications to limit the level of reinvestigation of AV/ICT systems. Also, IEC TC108 continues work on Edition No. 3 of IEC 62368-1 and the transition of the existing 60950 Part 2 standards (-21, -22 and -23) into the base IEC 62368-1 or similar hazard-based Part 2 standards. As a U.S. delegate to IEC TC108, and as a representative of UL LLC, the leading service provider to date of 62368-related knowledge and certification services, Tom will provide an update on current activities associated with both IEC 62368-1 and IEC TC108, with the audience encouraged to provide perspectives on their experiences preparing their own companies for the transition to 62368-1.
Speaker Bio: Tom Burke is one of UL’s Principal Engineers for AV & ICT equipment safety. Tom’s roles include, U.S. Delegate IEC TC108, including a member of its new Interpretation Panel; member of the ANSI/U.S. National Committee for IEC TC108; and Technical Advisor to the Convenor of Engineering Task Force No. 2 of the IECEE Committee of Testing Laboratories (CTL), which is responsible for consistent application of IEC 62368-1 under the IECEE CB Scheme. Tom also is past Chair & Vice Chair of the IEEE PSES Santa Clara Valley Chapter.
