Event Details

On January 21st, Idea Project is proud to host our first dinner of 2010. Our featured guest is Siddharth Kara, author, activist and international expert in the fight against human trafficking and modern-day slavery, whose work has been lauded by Secretary Clinton. He was originally slated to be a presenter at Idea Project this summer, but had a schedule conflict which required him to be in Europe for an anti-trafficking conference.

The evening event will include a five-course organic vegetarian dinner prepared by our friend Chef Meg of Large Marge Sustainables. And true to Idea Project, the evening will be anything but predictable.

Our gracious hosts for the evening are Rebecca Ver Straten-McSparren, Director of the LA Film Studies Center, and her husband David Raven, a drummer and composer. Attendees will receive the address to their Miracle Mile residence upon confirmation.

ABOUT SIDDHARTH

Siddharth Kara
is an Affiliate of the Human Rights and Social Movements Program, and a Fellow with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Carr Center Initiative to Stop Human Trafficking.  He is also the author of Sex Trafficking: Inside the Business of Modern Slavery.  Kara first encountered the horrors of slavery in a Bosnian refugee camp in 1995.  Subsequently, he traveled to fourteen countries across four continents to research these crimes, interviewing over four hundred slaves, witnessing firsthand the sale of humans into slavery, and confronting those who trafficked and exploited them.  His book provides a rare business and economic analysis of the global sex trafficking industry, and recommends legal and tactical measures to help abolish slavery once and for all.

Kara advises on slavery for several organizations worldwide, including the Clinton Global Initiative and Humanity United.  Since 2004, he has served on the board of directors of Free the Slaves.  In 2005, he testified as an expert on human trafficking before the US Congressional Human Rights Committee.  He serves on the committee founded by Kirk Douglas that is lobbying Congress to provide an official apology for pre-bellum slavery.  In 2009, he was selected as a Fellow for the acclaimed TEDIndia conference.
