About this Event

"Learnings from High Speed Weight Measurement on Coiled Tubing Units"

by Ken Newman, Athena Engineering

Abstract

A small group of industry experts are trying to understand the cause of the 80+ CT “whip end” failures in frac plug milling strings that have happened in the last few years. They theorized that resonance from the extended reach tools in the vertical section of the well is occurring, causing significant force amplitudes at the frequency of the tool. To better understand what is happening, a monitoring device was developed that reads the weight indicator many times per second. These measurements have been made on several frac plug milling jobs. The results show that resonance is occurring, but the problem is much more complicated than expected.
This presentation will review these findings and discuss the status of trying to understand the cause of the failures.
