This three day training combines ICISF's Group and Individual trainings.

About this Event

Join ICISF trained trainer Dennis Potter for a combined three day course that covers both the Group and Individual classes. Both certificates will be issued at the conclusion on the training.

Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support

This program is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of, and a specific protocol for Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support.

Program Highlights:

  • Concept of CISM as a comprehensive crisis intervention program
  • Understanding the role that individual crisis intervention plays in the comprehensive CISM program
  • Basic terms and concepts relevant to the study of crisis, traumatic stress, and crisis intervention
  • Differential utilities of selected crisis communication
  • Psychological reactions to crisis and trauma including common psychopathological conditions
  • SAFER protocol for individual crisis intervention and its role in comprehensive CISM
  • Use of the SAFER protocol for individual crisis intervention
  • Practice in the use of the SAFER protocol for individual crisis intervention
  • Common problems encountered while working with individual in crisis

Group Crisis Intervention

Designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum, the Group Crisis Intervention course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations, defusing’s and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.

Dennis Potter, LMSW, CAADC, CCS, FAAETS is a licensed social worker and certified addiction counselor. Dennis has received training and supervision in Cognitive Therapy from the Beck Institute in Philadelphia, PA. He helped to form one of the first community based Crisis Response Teams in the country. He was one of the founding members of the Mid-West Michigan CISM Team and the Michigan Crisis Response Association. Dennis is recognized as a Fellow, by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.

Since 1989, Dennis has helped to train many of the CISM teams in Michigan and frequently is called upon for consultation after particularly difficult events. Through their association with these teams, Dennis has conducted or consulted on all manner of traumatic events for communities, businesses, schools, police, fire and emergency services personnel, the U.S. Post Office, and community mental health agencies. Dennis has presented at many local, state, regional, national and international conferences. Dennis has presented at the last 10 International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) World Congresses. Dennis was awarded the ICISF Excellence in Training and Educations Award at the ICISF 2011 World Congress.
