Blood follow'd, but immortal; ichor pure,
Such as the blest inhabitants of heav'n
May bleed, nectareous; for the Gods eat not
Man's food, nor slake as he with sable wine
Their thirst, thence bloodless and from death exempt.
Iliad V. 364–382
The ancient gods lived high over man. The Greeks say they lived on the tallest mountain where they could watch over the humans and protect their domain. Occasionally, a human would rise up to clash with the gods, but they never spilled blood, for blood never flowed through the gods. Ichor pulsed through their veins, and when it spilled it streamed out gold and pure. The gods did not eat the food of man, instead consuming nectar and ambrosia, which granted them immortality.
