Event description

Description

The digital age is in full swing. Our socioeconomic landscape is changing fast. Governments, businesses, and residents are all being impacted. So, what can your community do? The upcoming presentation and workshop will increase awareness, discuss trends and implications, and review the Intelligent Community concept. This concept will help identify assets and gaps needed for any community to transition to, plan for, and prosper in the digital age.

This workshop will be offered free of charge to the first five communities that are able to commit a team to attend in each region. The team can consist of county and/or city and village leadership and can also include representatives from other organizations within the community that are interested (such as schools, colleges/universities, library, hospital, chamber of commerce, businesses, local telecom providers). Whatever makes the most sense for your community.

We will ask that each community complete a survey prior to the workshop that focuses on technology deployment and use and related workforce development. The survey should take between 30 - 60 minutes. Dr. Gallardo will review those results and provide each community with a preliminary report and recommendations during the workshop. Teams will then be given an opportunity to discuss their results and develop an action plan. Dr. Gallardo and members of our ICF Institute will offer any follow-up support needed after the workshop. The design and intent is for the teams to leave with the framework of a strategic action plan that will help to build more resilient and prosperous communities.

Dr. Roberto Gallardo is the Assistant Director at the Purdue Center for Regional Development. He holds an engineering degree from the University of the Americas in Mexico, a master’s in economic development from University of Southern Mississippi, and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Mississippi State University. Gallardo is interested in local and regional community economic development, including use of technology. He spearheaded the efforts of the Mississippi State University Extension Intelligent Community Institute that helps rural communities transition to, plan for, and prosper in the digital age.
