Event description
Choral music from the Baltic region, including pieces by Arvo Pärt, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Galina Grigorjeva and Veljo Tormis

About this event

Whitehall Choir explore some of the wealth of wonderful choral music from the Baltic region, including music from Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. From well-known works such as Arvo Pärt’s Bogoroditse Devo and The Beatitudes to lesser-known works by the nineteenth century Lithuanian composer Juozas Naujalis and Galina Grigorjeva, who was originally born in Ukraine but is now based in Estonia. The music and texts range from the beautiful, still, calm and icy such as Ēriks Ešenvalds’s Northern Lights to the fiery St John’s Day Songs for Midsummer’s Eve by Veljo Tormis.

Whitehall Choir, under its dynamic Music Director Joanna Tomlinson, is one of London’s leading amateur choirs.

Joanna Tomlinson is also Principal Conductor of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain Girls’ Choir and Artistic Director of Constanza Chorus. Recent engagements include conducting Bach’s Mass in B minor at Cadogan Hall with Constanza Chorus and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Richard Moore is Sub Organist at Guildford Cathedral. A graduate of the Royal College of Music (London), and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, where he was hailed as ‘a smouldering musician, with incredible rhythmic precision’, forthcoming engagements alongside his Cathedral duties include a concert tour to Denmark in the summer.
