 ICARE:  Understanding Developmental, Social-Emotional and Relational Influences for Assessment of Young Children 

By: Mayra Mendez, Ph.D., L.M.F.T., CGP, CA Endorsed IFECMHS/RPF II/Mentor 

This training will focus on developing the participant’s skills in the observation of dyads, assessment techniques, and identification of treatment needs to address the developmental, social-emotional and relational constructs in birth to five populations. Participants will learn observation skills related to the assessment of a dyadic relationship and develop skills to evaluate a child’s emotional development.  Furthermore, participants will build on their observations to develop age appropriate treatment plan goals and objectives to support dyadic work within the context of a Medi-Cal funding structure.  Issues related to the challenges associated with engaging minority and disenfranchised families in the assessment process will be addressed, as will the psychological tasks of early childhood.

To be held in Spa 6.

TENTATIVE Location: Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC), 10950 South Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90056

Parking:  Onsite Parking provided at WLCAC

Check-in, continental breakfast begin at 8:30am; Training from 9:00am - 4:00pm

Continental Breakfast and snack provided.

Participants will learn:

1. Application of neuro-developmental foundations of early childhood mental health to the process of assessment.

2. Application of strength-based and reflective interviewing practices in obtaining assessment and diagnostic information.

3. Integration of culturally-informed influences in caregiver/infant/toddler case conceptualization.

4. Impact of developmental profiles upon mental health functioning, social-emotional development and relationship formulation.

5. Increase understanding of systematic use of observation to inform case conceptualization.

6. Enhance participant’s capacity to recognize risk and protective factors that inform the individual child, parental functioning and relationship quality.


Continuing Education Credits: up to 6 credits available for PSY, MFT, and LCSW's

APA: Children’s Institute, Inc. is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Children’s Institute, Inc. maintains responsibility for this program and its content.  The California Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) now recognizes APA continuing education credit for license renewal for LCSWs and MFTs.



By registering for this training the agency is liable for the registration fee, which is fully refundable up to October 22, 2018. Registration is transferrable prior to the start of the training.  Once the training begins, fees are non-refundable/transferrable and no partial refunds will be given.
