Event description

Description

Do you want to get a good workout, have some fun, and make a difference in a child's life all at the same time? We are looking for dedicated, active and fun volunteers to be spotters for kids with disabilities who are learning to ride a two-wheeled bike. Volunteers will choose one session to volunteer for 75 minutes per day, at the same time each day, for 5 days, June 17-21.

The iCan Bike Camp teaches kids and adults with disabilities how to ride a conventional two-wheeled bicycle independently. iCan Bike uses adapted bikes, a specialized instructional program, and trained staff and volunteers to teach individuals how to ride. This program has an 80% success rate for getting kids riding a bike in just 5 days.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Be at least 15 years of age.
  • Preferably able to attend the same 90 minutes each day of the 5-days of camp (includes daily 15 minute training and debriefing). Please still register if you can only come some of the days! Write in the comments what days you cannot attend.
  • Able and willing to get some exercise! This camp requires you to walk quickly, jog, and/or run on a daily basis -- up to 3 miles per session.
  • Able to provide physical, emotional, and motivational support to assigned rider.
  • Attend 45 minute orientation on Sunday June 16 at 4:00 PM

Session Times:

  • Session 1: 8:30am-9:45am
  • Session 2: 10:05am-11:20am
  • Session 3: 12:20pm-1:35pm
  • Session 4: 1:55pm-3:10pm

Volunteer Role: Walk/jog/run alongside a rider as they are learning to ride a bike during a 75-minute session (with short breaks) for 5 days Monday through Friday. You will provide encouragement and physical support, as needed.

Orientation:

All volunteers are required to attend a 45-minute Orientation on Sunday June 16th at 4:00 PM. During this orientation, you will learn about how the iCan Bike program operates, what to expect each day in your role as a volunteer spotter, receive training tips on spotting your assigned rider and pick up your volunteer t-shirt. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and meet other volunteers in your session.

NOTE: Volunteer spotters will walk/jog approximately 3 miles during EACH 75-minute session so please keep this in mind if volunteering for multiple sessions.

For questions, please contact Diana Rovetti at rovetti@unr.edu or 775-233-9547

If you know someone who has a disability and would like to learn to ride a bike, see our iCan Bike Registration Page at: https://icanbikereno2019.eventbrite.com
