Description

The Down Syndrome Network of Northern Nevada has partnered with the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities, Reno Acess Advisory Commitee and Kiwanis Bike Program to bring the iCan Bike Program to Reno!

In 2013 The Down Syndrome Network of Northern Nevada brought the iCan Shine organization to Northern Nevada for the first time. The results were incredible! Success in learning to ride a bicycle is a major accomplisment and learning to ride builds confidence while improving self-image. Thanks to the hard work of staff, volunteers and the riders themselves, 80% of riders learned to ride a bike completely independently by the end of the 5-day camp.

iCan Bike uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program, and a trained staff to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend the same 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days (Monday - Friday) and they are physcially assisted and encouraged by two volunteer spotters. One volunteer must be secured by you and your rider, but that volunteer will not be with your rider- Details will be listed on the registration form. As you register, you will rank the time slots from one to five.

Over the course of the 5-day camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. The week is concluded on Friday night with a touching and inspiring award ceremony!

Rider must meet all criteria below to be eligible for iCan Bike Camp:

  • Minimum of 8 years of age
  • With a disability
  • Able to walk without an assistive device
  • Able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet
  • Able to sidestep to both sides
  • Minimum inseam of 20"
  • Maximum weight of 220 lbs.
  • Able to attend camp all 5 days

Each rider is encouraged to bring 1 or 2 healthy family members or friends age 16 or older to volunteer in the session, although not with them. The volunteer will be encouraging and physically assisting another rider during the 75-minute session.
*Please note that the volunteer will be walking and jogging during each sessions close to three miles*

Riders should bring their own bike or purchase a bike by the 3rd day of camp so they can transition to their bike before camp ends. Please visit the iCan Shine website for help purchasing the right bike. Our local bike partner is the Kiwanis Bike Program (used bikes), and they can help you purchase a bike best suited to the rider.

*Parents/guardians are required to stay on site during the 75 minute session for their rider each day for emergency purposes, personal care for your rider, and so that you don't miss their special achievements and success.*

There will be a mandatory orientation for parents/guardians and volunteers before the camp begins. We will email you with updated information soon.

We ask the riders do not attend the orientation meeting. More information will be given at the end of the registration form.
