IC Agile Certified Agile Coach Workshop

This is an intensive interactive experience that provides an opportunity to discover where you are in your Agile Coach journey and to learn new skills and techniques to progress further and faster in that journey. In all, you will learn fifteen tools to use with your teams. Two thirds of the workshop is spent in fun hands-on group activities with between 2-5 people depending on the activity. The activities include a variety of unique games for learning including “Choose Your Own Path” mini-books that present you with situations that you coach through by making choices. The workshop is methodology agnostic. What you learn is applicable for coaching in any Agile-oriented environment whether people are using Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, LeSS, or any other Agile-oriented set of practices. This accredited course meets ICAgile's newly updated 2018 Learning Outcomes for ICP-ACC.

Certification

At the successful completion of the learning objectives for the course, each participant will receive the IC Agile ICP-ACC, Certified Professional: Agile Coaching. It is one of the steps towards becoming an IC Agile certified expert in Agile Coaching (ICE-AC). This accredited course meets ICAgile's 2018 Learning Outcomes for ICP-ACC.

Audience

While the workshop has obvious appeal for Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches, other roles that can benefit from the workshop include: tech leads, project managers, managers, and product owners. All of the skills in the workshop are useful for anyone looking to increase their organization’s level of Agility or to become even more effective when working within an Agile environment.

Logistics

The workshop consists of a total of 21 learning hours broken up into 4 hours of preparation work, two in-class days of 7 hours each (plus breaks), and another 3 hours of work in a virtual session after the class to qualify for certification.

A light breakfast, lunch, and coffee will be provided.

Requirements

A working knowledge of Agile and at least one Agile methodology is required. Recent experience on an Agile team is highly recommended.

Course Outline

Skills practice, feedback, and demos – there will be many opportunities to practice and understand where you are in your Agile coaching journey using a unique and comfortable feedback system. In addition, the instructor will demonstrate techniques using real-world examples provided by participants.

What is Agile Coaching? – the role of the Agile Coach is often misunderstood as “Agile Expert.” While Agile expertise is necessary and allows a Coach to work in the modes of mentor and teacher, the modes of facilitator and coach are just as important. Introduces the formal concept of coaching.

Facilitation – introduction to the formal concept of facilitation and a few facilitation techniques.

Emotional intelligence and active listening - learning more about EQ and active listening and practicing them with other participants will enrich your ability to instill Agile thinking in those you are coaching.

The Agile Journey – tools for understanding where a team is in their Agile journey and what might be some good next steps for their particular stage of that journey.

Seeing beyond methodology – so often we and those we coach have a specific methodology in mind as we coach. In the extreme, we worry that people are not standing up in the standup. The Agile Manifesto heatmap activity is helpful for us as coaches and for those we coach to get a deeper sense of what’s really important and what is not as individuals, teams, and organizations work to increase their Agility.

The Agile Game – uses the “Agile Game” to experience Agile directly. Shows self-organization, retrospectives, iteration reviews, and ordering by value in action.

Building a great team – great teams live and breathe the Agile principles and values, trust each other, have high morale, are self-organizing, and have the support of the organization to succeed. Learn how to instill these values and capabilities into teams and help to increase the organizational support for Agile teams.

Shared vision – there are many things in an Agile ecosystem that work best when working towards a shared vision such as what it means to be Agile, product vision, team working agreement, and iteration goals. This section explores ways to achieve a shared vision such as the “shared visioning” exercise, fist of five, and consensus check. Create your shared vision by writing, using legos, or by mixing from a variety of materials on hand.

Finding and facilitating change – techniques for finding impediments and opportunities to affect change through observation, facilitation, and group activities. Leverages ADKAR, a change management model based on individual change, and an understanding of blindspots (yours and theirs).

Teaching – some of the material will be taught by the participants themselves. Everyone will have a chance to teach and get constructive feedback.

Mentoring – participants will each have a chance to practice their mentoring skills and get constructive feedback.

Advice and Feedback – giving and receiving feedback and advice can be daunting. In this workshop we’ll explore COIN, Non-Violent Communication, and awards as methods for giving feedback and also extend from feedback to advice.

Coaching Dojos – move step by step through each dojo, learning and practicing with demonstrations by the instructor. Facilitating a 1-1 conversation, basic coaching, coaching by following a flow, moving seamlessly from mode to mode as needed, and culminating in “fishbowl” coaching of a team. Scenarios will come from participants’ direct experiences with teams, past and present. Also includes an exercise on maximizing your return on coaching investment.

Coaching Questions – you will learn about a wide variety of open ended and neutral (non-leading) questions used during coaching to gather information, explore, deepen the conversation, and get commitment from the coachee.

Conflict management – learn about different conflict management approaches, the Thomas-Kilman conflict mode instrument, and practice using the modes during the Coaching Dojo

Start of an engagement – split into groups, clients and coaching teams. Work your way through starting with a new team / client. Work together as coaches and client to create a coaching agreement as well as a coaching alliance. Design a startup workshop for the new team.
