About this Event

Who will be crowned 2019 IBD British Hop Champion? Join us on Friday 21st February 2020 to find out. But hurry, places are limited and tickets are allocated on a first come first served basis.

Back in December 2019, 7 expert judges selected 8 finalists from 200 samples by more than 40 growers. The robust process saw hops of the highest standard presented and this is your chance to sample the very best of British hops!

The event

You are invited to the Institute of Brewing and Distilling in London for an afternoon of networking with the brightest and best growers, merchants and brewers to celebrate the award-winning brews and discover who is awarded the 2019 British Hop Champion.

  • Arrival: 11:00
  • Award Presentation: 11:30 – 12:00
  • Lunch: 12:00-13:30

The finalists

All class winners will be presented with a trophy and certificate but only one will be named the 2019 IBD British Hop Champion. We wish all finalists the very best of luck!

Class A: The Le May Cup awarded for the best sample of Goldings and eligible clones.

G M Day & Sons (Goldings)

Class B: The Hop Merchants Cup awarded for the best sample of hops (from each

individual category) bought on the basis of their aroma character, irrespective of Alpha Acid content.

Category A: High Aroma intensity: C R & G Daws (Admiral)

Category B: Strong Aroma Intensity: G M Day & Sons (WGV)

Category C: Delicate Aroma Intensity: Newnham Farms Ltd (Phoenix)

Class C: The Brewers Cup awarded for the best sample of hops that are bought

primarily for their high Alpha Acid content.

K Millen (Admiral)

Class D: The Wigan Cup awarded for the best sample of Fuggle.

Hukins Hops, Haffenden Farms

Class E: The Botanix Cup awarded for the best sample of Dwarf/Hedgerow variety.

L E Humphreys & Sons (Pioneer)

Class F: The Grower’s Challenge Bowl awarded for the best sample of new English variety.

M H & L Andrews (Harlequin)
