IAUC webinar: Local climate zones
Date and time
Location
Online event
This webinar will discuss the history and future direction of the Local climate zones (LCZ) classification system.
About this event
We are pleased to invite you to the fourth IAUC webinar where we will discuss past, current, and future research related to local climate zones with the worlds experts.
The local climate zones classification system is used in many studies these days, ranging from measurement site classification, urban planning, to numerical weather prediction modelling. In this webinar the presenters will explore how the LCZ’s came into being and how they can be used.
Webinar program:
"Personal reflections on the LCZ classification system" by Iain Stewart (University of Toronto, Canada)
Dr. Iain Stewart is a Geographer and Research Fellow at the Global Cities Institute, University of Toronto, Canada. As a Fellow of the Institute, Iain gives lectures and short courses on urban climatology to non-specialists in the field, and is co-authoring a book on the urban heat island. The mainstay of his work is both a critical analysis of heat island studies globally, and the development of scientific guidelines for assessing urban temperature effects at the local scale. A major output of his work is the widely used Local Climate Zone classification system. For these advances in the field, Iain is a two-time recipient of the William P. Lowry Memorial Award from the IAUC.
“LCZ mapping, a means to many ends” by Matthias Demuzere (Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany)
Dr. Matthias Demuzere obtained his PhD in Science at Leuven University, on the topic of synoptic-scale climatology and air quality. Afterwards he continued as post-doctoral researcher at KU Leuven, Ghent university, and he is currently a senior scientist at the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany. His research interests are broad and focus among others on global and high-resolution regional climate modelling, urban canopy layer modelling, green and blue urban infrastructure, multi-source remote sensing, urban mapping and crowdsourcing. In October 2018, he started his company “B-Kode”, enabling him to work as a freelance climatologist and data scientist for various clients, including small and medium enterprises and city administrations. Around the same time, he was also elected as a board member of the IAUC.
Panel discussion lead by Chandana Mitra (Auburn University, USA).
The panel will consist of Iain Stewart, Matthias Demuzere, Jason Ching (University of North Carolina, USA) and Julia Hidalgo (Interdisciplinary Centre of Urban Studies (LISST-Cieu), France)
The webinar will be recorded and shared with the community so that people who are unavailable or in inconvenient timezones are able to follow the presentations and discussion.
We look forward to seeing you there and hope for a lively discussion.
