Event description

Description

Identity and Agenda for Youth Ministry

Academic Information

Acknowledging both rootedness and fluidity in concepts of youth and the practice of ministry to youth, the 2019 biennial international conference of the IASYM will:

  • Explore theological foundations that drive the identity of youth ministry;
  • Reflect on the telos and public significance of youth ministry;
  • Revisit our theological understanding of youth;
  • Critically reflect on the end to which are we preparing the young people we work with; and
  • Consider contemporary movements to expand the age interest beyond youth to ministry among children and young adults.

Exploring these questions will help to equip those who work with young people as well as considering how to prepare young people to engage publicly during challenging and unstable political times.

Practical Information

Venue

All the conference sessions and lunches/dinners will be held in St John’s College, Durham. A limited number of rooms in St John’s will be allocated to conference participants on a first come, first served basis. The remainder of conference delegates will stay in Collingwood College, which is a 15-20 minute walk away. The rooms in St John’s have shared bathrooms, and are mostly singles (there are a small number of double and twin rooms at a discount, please contact admin@iasym.org directly to enquire about these). All the rooms at Collingwood are singles, with ensuite bathrooms. A full-English cooked breakfast is served at both colleges, with guests asked to eat breakfast at their place of overnight accommodation.

Addional accommodation

If you require additional accommodation before or after the conference, please book this separately via the college by contacting Sue Hobson, s.l.hobson@durham.ac.uk . The cost is £42.50 which includes the room and breakfast, and is payable directly to the college upon arrival.

Travel Information:

Newcastle (NCL) is the nearest airport. Transportation between the airport and Durham is straightforward.

Rail: The ‘Metro’ train connects Newcastle Airport with Newcastle Train station. From there, trains run to Durham station and take about 20 minutes. Tickets for the entire journey can be purchased online (www.mytrainticket.co.uk/cheap-train-tickets-to-newcastle-airport) or in the station. The colleges are within walking distance, or there is a taxi rank at the station.

Taxi: Airport Express (www.airport365.com) specialises in journeys from Newcastle Airport to Durham, and will deliver guests directly to the colleges. The cost is £35 per journey PER CAR. Andy at Airport Express has agreed that if you email him and tell him that you are coming for the IASYM conference, he will group you with other participants arriving at the same time, thus reducing the cost to be split between you. Airport Express email: airport365@live.co.uk
