Dr. Christine Kinealy of Quinnipiac University will discuss the awe-inspiring Maud Gonne, heiress, actress, activist, and founder of the 'Daughters of Ireland.' She was a fervent nationalist orator who worked to free Ireland from British Rule. She opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921 in support of objections raised by Eamon De Valera. Ms. Gonne's life was dedicated to the Irish people and the birth of the Irish nation.
Dr. Kinealy is the founding director of Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac University and an authority on Irish history. She was named “one of the most influential Irish Americans” by Irish America magazine. Dr. Kinealy is the author of numerous publications on topics including the Great Hunger and the abolition movement in Ireland. Her most recent book titles are: Daniel O'Connell and the Anti-Slavery Movement; Frederick Douglass and Ireland; and, Black Abolitionists in Ireland.
