Event description

Description

Translators and interpreters are translingual communication enablers. To ‘enable’ others, they must ‘empower’ themselves. How? This is the question the speaker, Chen Ji, will try to address in his lecture. Self-empowerment of linguists involves more than translation-specific skill development. It also entails mental and physical preparedness, a commonsensical interpretation of the axiomatic trinity of ‘faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance’ and a holistic approach to translation, more as a parallel bilingual ‘thinking’ process than a linear ‘conversion’ exercise. Mr. Ji is a staff interpreter of the United Nations, Member of Association international des interprètes de conférence and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, UK. He is also the author of ‘Leonoir & Gingerlet (also starring a gaggle of sidekicks)’, a bilingual nonfiction storybook about pets. In his previous ‘incarnations’, he worked as English teacher, lexicographer, translator, broadcaster and freelance interpreter for the private sector, governments and international organizations. He will be sharing some compelling personal stories and fascinating anecdotes throughout his lecture.

The lecture will be delivered in Chinese.

Free, but advanced registration is requested.
