Description

Poet Mandy Kahn is the 2019-2020 Artist-in-Residence, and she returns for the second installment of her bimonthly series entitled "I Like Peace," which will feature a concert in the library by the band Lavender Diamond, as well as new works of immersive and interactive poetry by Kahn.

Lavender Diamond is an LA-based band started and fronted by singer Becky Stark; the LA Times called the band’s second record “as beautiful as it is expansive, with Stark’s crystalline vocals adorning arrangements that shift from slow-motion chamber pop to dry acoustic folk to glittering orchestral disco.” W Magazine called that album “a stunning collection of achy, irresistible torch songs.” The Boston Globe called Stark’s voice “an airy soprano that swoops and soars like a delicate bird.”

In addition to making albums with Lavender Diamond, Becky Stark has toured with many other bands. Writes the LA Times, “With all of Stark’s other projects—she’s spent time guesting with the Decemberists, She & Him and actor-singer John C. Reilly, along with costarring in the Living Sisters with Inara George and Eleni Mandell—it’s a minor miracle she’s been able to make room for another Lavender Diamond outing. But when the results sparkle this brilliantly, the multi-tasking seems exceedingly worth it.”

In Lavender Diamond, Stark is joined by drummer and cartoonist Ron Rege, Jr. and composer and pianist Steve Gregoropoulos; as part of the evening’s program, Kahn will speak with all three about their personal peace-building practices.

Poet Mandy Kahn will share immersive poems, which combine lines of formal poetry with musical technique, audience participation and performance. On July 28th, Kahn presented an hour-long program of these immersive poems at the Getty Center.

Explains Kahn, “The revolution of peace begins with the individual: with the tiny, private peace-building practices we choose to incorporate into our own lives. When we build peacefulness in the self, we become conduits of peace in the world. This series gives its guests—musicians, choreographers, filmmakers, writers—the chance to both share their work and to speak of the ways that they choose to build peace into their lives.”

This series is free (donations always welcome) and open to the public (age 15+). Co-Presented by Current Projects.
