Sign Up for Your New Resident Retreat!

We're looking forward to your stay at International House and would like you to join us for a retreat shortly after your arrival. Please visit the retreat information page to learn why we have retreats, what it will be like, what you will need to bring and what will be provided for you. The orientation retreats are open to new residents only. Due to very limited space, priority must be given to new incoming residents only.

The cost to attend a retreat is $33.00 - a fee that is already subsidized by the Program Office.  This fee will partly help cover the cost of transportation, food, lodging, and staff labor.  Due to the cost and limited spaces available, if you DO NOT attend the retreat you have registered for, you won't receive a refund. If you must cancel, please contact the Program Office at least a week in advance so we will be able to offer your place to other residents and provide you with a refund.

Please be sure to plan your schedule accordingly - don't sign up if you have class, an orientation meeting, or travel plans on that day!!

You are now part of a unique and diverse cultural environment, which includes close to 600 students from 70 different countries.  As we are a unique intercultural, residential and programming community, you might want to bring along something special that is representative of your culture, a musical instrument, national attire etc.

Your orientation retreat in particular promises to be one of the most vivid first memories of your I-House experience. You will learn how to optimize your stay at   I-House as you gain a clearer understanding of the I-House mission. Most importantly, the retreat is designed to facilitate new global friendships.

Our site for the spring retreats is Walker Creek Ranch located in Marin County, just north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. You can visit their website at:

http://www.walkercreekranch.org/.

Due to sleeping arrangement limitations, we may occasionally need to move residents to a different retreat. We will contact you well in advance and work to find a retreat you can attend if this is the case.

Choose one of the following overnight retreats:

#1:  Friday, January 13 until Saturday, January 14

#2:  Saturday, January 14 until Sunday, January 15

What happens if I am late for the bus?

You will miss the Retreat. We load the bus at the I-House front steps for the Friday retreat by 12:15 pm, and by 12:00 pm for the Saturday retreat. If you do not arrive between 11:45 am – 12:00 pm on Friday or between 11:30pm – 11:45 am on Saturdays, we reserve the right to "recycle" your space. The bus leaves at 12:15 PM Friday and 12:00 PM Saturday: We will NOT wait for late people.

What is the Retreat Site like?

Walker Creek Ranch is a secluded retreat spot located in West Marin County, north of San Francisco, and is blessed with diverse habitat and an abundance of wildlife. There are centrally located bathhouses and we will sleep in cabins with bunk beds.

What if my plans change and I can NOT go?

You are only eligible to attend a Retreat as a new resident. A space has been reserved for you at the cost to I-House (less your subsidized payment). If you are not able to attend, please call us immediately @ 642-9460 to cancel, so that someone else may attend in your place.

Can I smoke cigarettes?

Smoking is only allowed outside in designated areas: Never inside any camp buildings.

What does I-House provide for the Retreats?

I-House pays for the majority of the cost of transportation, food, and lodging, as well as staff labor. In addition I-House will bring some sports equipment, board games, and some educational and recreational activities.

What will the weather be like?

At this time of year we usually have heavy fog and mist in the early mornings that usually burn away by mid day creating hazy sunshine, cool temperatures and fairly cold evenings. We’ve planned both indoor and outdoor activities for your enjoyment. Please bring appropriate clothing as it can get quite chilly in the evening and sometimes it may rain.

What do I need to bring with me to the Retreat?

Bring your soap/shampoo, toothbrush/paste, towel, walking shoes, a pillow, blanket, sheets, or a SLEEPING BAG. Perhaps you could borrow one from a fellow resident. Dress is practical and casual: be prepared for cool and maybe cold weather. Miscellaneous: musical instruments, a camera, and your favorite dance music CD. PETS, ALCOHOL, AND ILLEGAL DRUGS ARE NOT ALLOWED.

What is the food like?

The dining staff uses regionally grown produce, fresh fish and poultry to make homemade family style meals. Vegetarian and Vegan options will be available and any items containing pork will be marked. Please email the Program Office if you have any other dietary needs that we should be aware of.

How much do I pay? Retreats are $33.00 for each new resident. If you DO NOT attend the retreat you signed up for the $33.00 payment is NON REFUNDABLE.
