Event description

Description

I am Jane Doe is a documentary chronicling the legal battle that several American mothers are waging on behalf of their teenage daughters, who were trafficked for commercial sex on Backpage.com.

The documentary shines a light on child sex-trafficking, a gut-wrenching reality that affects every community in America, debunking the myth that this crime only happens in developing countries. What makes this film especially moving in our community is that one of the 15 year-olds featured in the documentary is from Seattle. This case was heard in the Washington State Supreme Court and summary judgment for Backpage.com was reversed. The case will be heard this October in Superior court for a factual determination of Backpage’s liability.

I am Jane Doe was written and directed by Mary Mazzio, narrated by Academy-Award and Golden Globe nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Miss Sloane), and produced by Mazzio and Academy-Award nominee Alec Sokolow (Toy Story). It chronicles the epic battle that mothers are waging on behalf of their under-age daughters who were bought and sold for sex on Backpage.com, the adult classifieds section that for years was part of the iconic Village Voice.

Immediately following the movie, Faith Ireland, Retired WA State Supreme Court Justice and a member of the Seattle 4 Rotary Club, will make comments and answer questions.
