What is i am a gamer?:
Strong female protagonists are rare to find in games. Far too often woman characters in games are portrayed as weak, defenseless, or helpless, and only exist to be recused, or as an object of desire of the male protagonists.
I am a gamer plans to help change that. Join with developers all over the world in creating a game in 48 hours. The theme: Make a game featuring awesome female protagonists.
Why is this a problem?:
I would highly recommend watching the "Damsel in Distress" video series by Anita Sarkeesian.
There is also an incredible amount of sexism going on in the games industry itself, not just in the products it creates.
I'm in! What are the details?:
Be sure to get a ticket here on Eventbright! We need to know how many developers are coming, and only have capacity for the first 50, so please register your free ticket ahead of time.
Starting at 6pm on Friday, and going until 6pm Sunday night, developers will create their games. Either on their own or in teams. Forming teams beforehand is welcome. If you would like to be part of a team and don't have one, we will play matchmaker at the start of the event or you can be a "floater", working with multiple teams as they need your help.
We will have an orientation+meet and greet starting at 5:30pm on Friday, and immediately after the jam on Sunday starting at 6pm we will let teams take turns presenting their finished games to the other jammers.
Whether you're a designer, programmer, artist, writer, or audio engineer, we are looking for developers and game creators of all skill levels and trades.
The event will be held at Microsoft's BizSpark lab. An awesome creative space where you can mingle with other developers. We'll also have a couple presentations going on during various points of the event, more details on that to be announced.
How much is this going to cost me?:
Nothing! Participating in the game jam will be free of charge thanks to our platinum sponsor Microsoft.
At least one meal and some snacks will be provider for free during the event, more if we can secure enough sponsorships.
If you're interested in sponsoring or donating to this event, please email Tobiah@PlayPerro.comWhat will be provided? What should I bring:
Computers will not be provided, so bring your own development gear. Laptops are highly encouraged over desktops.
Pens and paper or note-taking devices are also helpful when working out details.
We will have standard video adapters, but if you have an usual connector you should also bring the appropriate connecters to make sure you can present your games at the end of the event.
Where do I need to go?:
The event will be held in the "BizSpark" lab inside of Building 2 at the Mountain View Microsoft campus.
Address: 1085 La Avenida St, Mountain View, CA
Directions: Take the Shoreline exit off the 101 heading north, and make the first right onto Pear avenue. Take the next right onto Inigo Way, and then left at the end of the block onto La Avenida street. The Microsoft campus will be on the right. Building 2 is the Northwest most building.
How long can I be in the BizSpark Lab? Can I sleep there?:
The BizSpark lab will be open 24 hours during the game jam, and you're free to come and go as you'd like.
Working all 48 hours is not recommended. Getting a good nights rest is important during a game jam! A quick power nap is ok, but due to space limitations sleeping on site will not be encouraged.
What else do I need to know?:
We need sponsors! If you're interested helping feed some hard working game developers during the event, please email Tobiah@PlayPerro.com
There will be security on site at all times, but i am a gamer, Microsoft, or any of its sponsors will not be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged equipment during the event.
