About this event

The intent of this course is to train new firefighters in basic firefighting skills. It is often required for participation in prescribed burning activities. Participants who complete all course requirements will receive federally-recognized NWCG certificates for S-130, S-190, and L-180.

**This training is presented in a hybrid format. Participants must complete 40 hours of training total, including online material via Canvas and attending an in-person field day in order to earn NWCG certificates for S-130, S-190, L-180.**

Required activities:

Online training (33 hours), to be completed at your own pace, available beginning October 13, and including: S-190 = 7 hours of online learning, S-130 = 22 hours of online learning, and L-180 = 4 hours of online learning.

  • PLEASE NOTE: You should expect to devote approximately 33 hours to complete the online material in Canvas; a suggested timeline to keep you on track will be provided once the online course begins. ONLINE COURSEWORK IS DUE DEPENDING ON FIELD DAY LOCATION SELECTED BELOW:

In-person training (1 day; ~7 hours), to be completed at one of the following dates/locations:

  • Nov. 2 at Apalachicola Bluffs & Ravines Preserve, in Bristol, FL (online coursework due Oct. 31)
  • Nov. 10 at Ordway-Swisher Biological Preserve, in Melrose, FL (online coursework due Nov. 7)
  • Nov.17 at Disney Wilderness Preserve, in Poinciana, FL (online coursework due Nov. 14)
  • Nov. 17 at Wekiwa Springs State Park, in Apopka, FL (online coursework due Nov. 14)

Each on-site training day will accommodate ~12 participants, on a first-come first-served basis. When registering, select your ticket based on the preferred date/location for the field training. Each participant is responsible for their own travel to the site. Field activities will be held outside. Face coverings will be expected. More details on each field day will be forwarded later.

Participants MUST bring 6 inch or higher leather boots, leather gloves, and lunch to the field training. If you have PPE, please bring that too. Travel to the field day location is the responsibility of the attendee; please plan accordingly.

Material covered:

Upon completion of S-190, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the basic terminology used in wildland fire.
  • Identify and discuss the fire triangle.
  • Identify and discuss key characteristics of the primary wildland fire environment components - fuels, weather, and topography.
  • Identify critical fire weather factors that, combined with receptive fuels, may result in extreme fire behavior.
  • Recognize how alignment of fuels, weather, and topography can increase the potential for extreme fire behavior.

Upon completion of S-130, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of the Standard Firefighting Orders and Watch Out Situations.
  • Describe what the Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones (LCES) system is and how it relates to the Standard Firefighting Orders.
  • Describe the various communication methods and tools used for collecting, producing, and distributing information.
  • Describe the standards, tools and equipment, and various methods used in fireline construction.​
  • Describe the methods for extinguishing a fire with or without the use of water.
  • Demonstrate the ability to construct fireline to required standards using various methods, tools and equipment, and techniques. ​

Upon completion of L-180, participants will be able to:

  • Develop an awareness of human performance issues and how they can impact fire service job performance.
  • Identify human performance content that relates to the individual, including situation awareness, communication, decision making, risk management, and teamwork skills.
  • Incorporate your understanding of human performance issues in the fire service so that individual firefighters and firelighters can integrate more effectively into teams/crews working in dynamic, high-risk environments.

Registration Fee:

$125 regular registration fee (student rate available for full-time college students)

LATE registration fee of $150 will apply to the dates below for each field location:

  • Apalachicola Bluffs & Ravines Preserve (ABRP): no new registrations after Oct.17th.
  • Ordway-Swisher Biological Station (OSBS): after Oct.17 until 24th*
  • Disney Wilderness Preserve (DWP): after Oct. 24 until 31st*
  • Wekiwa Springs State Park (WSSP): after Oct. 24 until 31st*

*Registering within this window means you have <21 calendar days to complete 33 hours of online coursework.

We cannot emphasize this enough-- register early to ensure adequate time can be devoted to the online portion!

All refund requests are subject to a processing fee; NO refunds will be offered after access to the online course begins. Registration closes when capacity is reached, or as specified above.
