Event description

Description

Join us for a further exploration of the tradition of hunting and gathering, from food and clothing to the naturalist’s habit of creating collections. Each of our six speakers will share their expertise, from identification and use of the object of the hunt to identifying the landscape or phenology clues that will help hunters and gatherers to find what they’re looking for.

Our second speaker is Jim Phillips, Antler Man. Jim has lived his whole life in Three Forks, and started shed hunting in the Gallatin Canyon at the age of 10. He plans to continue to shed hunt as long as he’s able. The main difference between Jim’s antler collection and others is that he has never bought an antler. He’s traded over the years and some have been given to him.

Join us for his lecture, Stories from 60 Years of Shed Hunting. Jim will share the story of how he started collecting sheds more than 60 years ago and how he goes about searching for them. Jim has kept a journal of what he’s found and what he’s seen on his hikes since 1969, and he also keeps an antler count, dividing up his finds into different categories. He’ll reflect on some of his best and worst days, and share shed hunting experiences that include encounters with grizzly bears and rattlesnakes. He’ll bring some of his more memorable finds, and share how shed hunting saved his life.
