Event description

Description

Changes in 2018: Due to the current government administration, federal funding for the hummingbird project has been completely eliminated. Thus, to run the project in 2018, we will be required to charge for tickets. It's the only way to pay for project expenses (unless we can find a generous donor). We hope this a temporary solution and funding will be available again in future years. We reserve the right to cancel the event if we do not have enough participants registered to cover costs. Once registered, there are no refunds.

Come and observe Boise State's Intermountain Bird Observatory biologists banding hummingbirds near Idaho City. All ages are welcome! Please remember, you are at someone’s personal house. They have graciously allowed us to be there, so be respectful.

Shuttle Procedure: With the increasing popularity of this project, you can imagine how much wear and tear hundreds of vehicles put on their private road each season. There is also an increased risk for a grass fire with dozens of vehicles parking directly on the tall grass in the hot weather. DO NOT DRIVE DIRECTLY TO THE HOUSE. There is free parking at a church in Idaho City– the Idaho City Christian Center (3853 Highway 21). If heading north (from Boise), the church will be on your right hand side, between the Sherriff’s office and the Fire Department. Turn right onto the paved driveway, and then there will be a gravel parking lot on your right (sort of behind the Sherriff’s office). Park in this gravel lot. There will be a sign where to wait for the shuttle (a 15 passenger van). The shuttle is first come, first served. If there isn’t a shuttle there, one will be there shortly. We will run the shuttle approximately every 20 minutes. The first shuttle will leave the church at 6:45 a.m. The LAST shuttle will leave the church at 10:20 am.

Returning – shuttles will leave the banding every 20-30 minutes to return to the church parking lot. Last shuttle leaving banding is at 10:20 am.

If you arrive after 10:30am, you can drive your vehicle directly to the house (directions at the bottom of this email), but note that there are very few, and potentially NO hummingbirds after 10:30 am.

There are no restrooms or phone to use at the church. Make sure to use the restroom at the visitor center (corner of Main St and Hwy 21…kitty corner to the gas station). These restrooms are open 24 hours. There are no restrooms at the house (unless in an emergency).

Note, there is likely no cell service in Idaho City, so don’t rely on your phone (although there is sometimes one or two bars right near the visitor center).

CANCELLING YOUR RESERVATION:

In the event you need to CANCEL, please do so asap. Please don't be a NO SHOW....there are people on the waitlist. There are no refunds.

HOW TO CANCEL:Just log in to Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/login/?referrer=/mytickets/

Go to the Tickets page, and locate your order. Or your order might show up on the front page. Click your order to view order details, and then select "Cancel Order" to cancel your registration. We'll send you and the event organizer an email confirming the cancellation. It might not work from a mobile device, so in that case do it from a laptop.

Other information: Please bring whatever you need to be happy OUTSIDE – food, drinks, warm clothes, and your camera! The location is higher elevation than the Treasure Valley, so expect temperatures to be 5-10 degrees colder than in town.

Upon arrival, you will be asked to sign in and your reservation will be checked. Please do not bring additional people with you unless they also have a reservation.

There are no public restrooms at the location, so please use the restroom in Idaho City before coming to the event. There are restrooms at the Visitors Center at the corner of Hwy 21 and Main St, and also at the gas station right across the street (but slightly south) from the visitors center.

Directions: (Please note, you can no longer drive your personal vehicle directly to the banding any time before 10:30 am. You must park in Idaho City and we will provide you a shuttle. However, if you arrive after 10:30am, you can drive your vehicle directly to the house, but note that there are very few, and potentially NO hummingbirds after 10:30 am.)

Directions from Boise (it’s about an hour drive from Boise): Follow Hwy. 21 toward Idaho City. Between mileposts 37 and 38, (closer to 38) turn LEFT just past Lodgepole Rd. onto McIntyre Gulch Rd (street sign isn’t obvious, but it's just past the lighted "welcome to Idaho City sign" on your right). Stay on this road for 0.6 miles into a big meadow. There are only 4 houses surrounding the meadow, it is the highest on the hill, the third counting from the left, and the only stucco house - the others are log homes. The address is 28 Fox Meadow Dr. – the house is yellow stucco with red tile roof. DO NOT USE A GPS OR PHONE TO NAVIGATE THERE. USE THE ABOVE WRITTEN DIRECTIONS.

If you have disabilities, you are welcome to park directly at the house any time throughout the morning.

This is our first time attempting charging for tickets, so please be patient with us as we work out the details. We would like to hear any suggestions you may have to improve the experience. Please let us know by email jessicapollock@boisestate.edu or by phone 208-426-2225. Thank you for understanding and cooperating!
