This online continous course entitled: Human Trafficking: Introduction for Healthcare Providers. Human trafficking-considered modern day slavery- is a global problem and is becoming increasingly prevalent in the United States and in the state of Michigan. This module was created for healthcare professionals, and in particular nurses, to:

  • discuss the problem of human trafficking in Michigan and other states
  • identify signs that an individual is a victim of being trafficked
  • describe the assessment guidelines and process for adults and minors
  • understand the voluntary and mandatory reporting processes for victims of human trafficking

As a result of completing this module, the primary authors, Katie Kessler, MSN, RN and Kathy Forrest, MSN, MA, RN aim to educate, raise awareness of the problem and to provide tools and strategies to better care for victims of human trafficking.

Effective January 6, 2017, the Michigan Board of Nursing (MBON) released revised Administrative rules that require all licensed nurses to complete training in human trafficking for initial licensure and relicensure to cover all of the following:

  • Types and venues of trafficking in Michigan and the United States
  • Identifying victims of trafficking in healthcare settings
  • Identifying warning signs of trafficking in healthcare settings for minors and adults
  • Identifying resources for reporting suspected victims of human trafficking

The training requirement dictates a timeline beginning with the first renewal cycle after the ruling - so the period of 2017-2022. The timeline for training of individuals who are seeking initial nursing licensure is at 5 or more years following the ruling - or by 2022. This module complies with the requirements for continuing nursing education and specifically satisfies the requirement for the standards of training of human trafficking, as listed above.

This module was trialed to determine the contact hour(s) equivalent for continuing nursing education (CNE). 1.4 CNE contact hours were determined. This contact hour total will be reflected in the certificates provided to individuals who successfully complete the requirements. Criteria for successful completion include an engagement with the required online content, 80% or better pass rate on the course quiz, and a completed evaluation.

This independent study activity will be available to learners, until December 2022. No conflict of interest is disclosed by either the presenters or planners of this activity. No financial support from a commercial entity was present.

Michigan State University College of Nursing is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education; by the Ohio Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. (OBN-001-91)
